How to design a more lived-in garden: Inspired by the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026

This year, I left the RHS Chelsea Flower Show more sure than ever that gardens are for living in, not just looking at.

Whatever the size of your space, beauty should coexist with functionality so that your garden is a usable extension of your home, rather than just a place to grow things.

Gardens shouldn't be cordoned off, pristine and untouched, for fear of unsettling them. They should look loved and lived in.

Think herbs threatening to spill over onto the path, flowers cascading over rustic pots or winding round a vintage obelisk, a half-drunk cup of coffee on a weathered table, vibrant cushions strewn about, having been snoozed on and left untidied.

The 2026 Chelsea hangover got us thinking: let’s forget the show garden fantasy.

Instead, lean into building an outdoor space that's ready to go, whenever the mood strikes, so that impromptu gatherings feel effortless, laid-back and entirely natural.

Here are the brands, in and out of Chelsea, showing us how to create it, piece by piece.

Comfortable, low-maintenance seating that you can leave out year-round

The biggest barrier to regularly using your garden isn't down to the weather. You’ve heard ‘it's not about the weather, it’s about what you wear!’ - this is our version.

It’s not about the weather; it’s about having somewhere comfortable, clean, and ready to sit down on, come rain, shine, or showers.

We don’t feel inclined to perch on a hard, cobwebbed bistro chair. And we can’t be bothered to drag out and dust off the rattan, just to do the mad dash for the covers as soon as it showers.

We want something you sink straight into, whenever the mood takes you, whether that be for a quick mid-morning coffee or an impromptu fizz-filled afternoon with friends.

Our trick for making a garden feel like a second living room, for you and everyone who visits, is to create a loose, inviting cluster of outdoor seats rather than a formal arrangement. Face pieces inward, leaving gaps for side tables or an ottoman, and position the whole thing close to where drinks tend to land.

Our sofa sets are designed to be a permanent part of your garden, not stored away from it.

And that's exactly what our bean bag sofa sets are designed for. We only use marine-grade, water-resistant, and fade-proof fabric for our furniture, so you can leave your bean bag seats outside year-round. And it’s plush, so it feels like a proper sofa - you won’t want to get up from it!

At Chelsea this year, we also launched our new favourite seat in the garden: the bean bag armchair, which gives you that same blissful collapse-into-it feeling without needing a full set.

Give your garden linger-worthy shady spots

British summers are unpredictable, and we’ve had a spate of heatwaves over the past few years, which means shade is just as important as sunshine.

But shade doesn't have to mean a boxy, dark green or grey parasol stuck in the middle of everything, being perfectly functional but not exactly in keeping with your Midsomer or Mediterranean garden theming.

Titania Living makes hand-printed garden umbrellas inspired by Indian craftsmanship, with a range of soft furnishings and picnic and dining accessories to match.

Their umbrellas are so beautiful that they become a focal point of your garden or al fresco zone rather than an afterthought.

Pair one with your seating area or set up a beautiful shaded spot on the grass. The perfect place to sip iced tea while you play a card game with your teenager or catch up with your neighbours over nibbles.

Choose pots and planters that look like they’ve always been there

The lived-in look doesn't happen overnight, but with a little thought, you can get there faster than you'd think.

The trick is scale and imperfection: terracotta pots that have weathered slightly, mismatched in height and planted with sweet-smelling, cottage-style plants and herbs that are overflowing rather than neat.

Pots & Pithoi produce hand-thrown Cretan terracotta planters made using methods unchanged for thousands of years. No two pots are identical, and the subtle variations in colour and texture mean they look found rather than bought.

Cluster them around your seating, up steps, or beside an outdoor kitchen for that warm, unhurried sense that your garden has always been this way.

Make your garden usable from day to night

Who doesn’t love a fire pit? They’re not just for special occasions; they’re what makes it possible to sit out past 8 pm on a warm night when you'd otherwise drift inside.

They’re a mesmerising feature that people can’t help but gather around, laughing, chatting, or simply sitting quietly with good books and great wine.

Like popping the lamps on in your living room, a firepit shifts your garden's whole atmosphere for the better as dusk creeps in.

The Fire Pit Company makes intricately designed fire pits and fire pit spheres that look just as good when they’re unlit as they do with glowing flames bouncing around inside.

Position your fire pit a safe distance from any flammable structures or materials, on a non-combustible surface such as stone slabs. Choose a well-ventilated, open area where the wind will not blow smoke directly into seating areas (or your neighbours' windows!)

For extra cosiness, keep a basket of blankets or throws nearby too and don’t be shy with the marshmallows.

Swap your twice-a-year BBQ habit for regular al fresco dining

Having the option to cook outside instantly changes how you’ll use your garden.

Charlie Oven makes quick-to-light, easy-to-use charcoal ovens, with outdoor kitchen cabinets to go alongside them. All in an eye-catching range of bright, weatherproof colours.

When the oven's already out there, firing it up on a Wednesday evening feels far more appealing - especially if you don’t need to stand around waiting for a chimney starter to get going.

You could even embrace your culinary creativity by adding features to your kitchen garden, such as a wood-fired pizza oven, kebab racks, or a teppanyaki grill.

Not only does installing a proper garden kitchen transform your outdoor space into an enviable social hub, but it also extends the traditional BBQ season well beyond summer, meaning your garden can be used year-round.

Light the way to a garden you can use all year round

The right lighting means your outdoor space can be used all night long, should you wish.

Fairy Dusk specialise in decorative lighting for your home and garden. Warm, ambient, dappled glows that make everything feel like an extension of a lovely indoor space.

String lights through your canopy, wrap them around planters, place lanterns onto your table, beside your favourite chair or line the garden path.

Aim for a woodland-esque feel so that your garden feels illuminated - but twinkly.

A garden for every occasion

You want your garden to feel like an extension of your living space. Clever design and comfort shouldn’t stop at your back door, and now it doesn't have to. Investing in a few key pieces to make your garden easier to live in will be the best decision you make this year.

Think about what stops you from lounging outside, eating outside or gathering with friends. We love a British summer, but dappled Autumn evenings or crisp, cold days in early Spring are also great times to be in your garden, so go ahead and make your garden a year-round place to be.

At Armadillo Sun, we believe that laid-back, fuss-free and luxury garden living is a must. So we design and create all our uber-durable bean bag furniture with that in mind. Shop the full range today.
