The future is orange...

Orange Bean Bag Lounger with girl by the pool

Not so long ago we were told the future is orange. We are firmly in that future now and can confirm that the present is looking pretty orangey. Orange looks fresh, fruity and fabulous, inside and out! It’s really easy to live with – not necessarily floor-to-ceiling orange walls, but certainly accessories and furniture. Here’s how to work this eye-popping, extrovert shade the Armadillo Sun way.

A short history of orange

In the early Christian church, orange was a symbol of glory and fruits of the earth; later, medieval artists used it in manuscript-painting. But in Europe it only got its name in the late 15th century, when Portuguese merchants imported orange trees from Asia – previously, it was simply ‘yellow-red’. Adopted by the House of Orange dynasty, it became associated with Protestantism and later was cherished by artists, including the Pre-Raphaelites and Impressionists. Today, we associate it with vitamin C, high visibility – and the Dutch football team!

Orange bean bag chairs and loungers

Why choose orange for your luxury bean bag furniture?

Between red and yellow on the colour wheel, orange is daring and sunny. Studies show that orange increases oxygen supply to the brain and enhances confidence, energy and understanding. Orange will inject zest, happiness and a contemporary vibe into your home and garden.

Orange aid - how to style it

Orange makes a statement all on its own – all our big, contemporary designs come in this joyful shade, including luxury adult beanbag chairs, loungers and tables, as well as a mix of accessories, plain and patterned. It dazzles against green, so makes a splash in any garden (in 1977, Flymo changed the colour of its lawnmowers from blue to orange after finding that orange lawnmowers were easier to spot).

Neutrals are also your friend. Indoors, clean and modern white walls make orange furniture and accessories even more vibrant and summery, while grey-painted walls create a more subtle backdrop. Layer up the two tones with cushions in Pumice grey or a luxurious woolly grey throw.

If you want to mix it up, take style advice from Vincent van Gogh who wrote: ‘There is no orange without blue.’ Orange and blue say Summer: hot sun, cool seas. Check out our colour-block adult bean bag chairs and loungers in orange and navy – they'll make you feel as if you’re at the beach! Coordinating bean bag tables in plain orange or patterned Tulip orange make the perfect chairside accessories.

Other easy blue/orange combos are Ocean blue modular Monaco furniture with a selection of orange all-weather cushions – plain, striped and patterned – plus a luxury lambswool Pumpkin throw for cool evenings outside. Or mix up Tulip orange with Tulip navy or Tulip turquoise beanbag furniture. Orange also looks wonderful within blue interiors – see Pantone’s tranquil Classic Blue, its Colour of 2020, for inspiration.

Energising and social, orange is especially good for kitchen-diners, breakfast rooms and garden entertaining.
